I like this piece, but the shadow itself isn't natural (despite the fact that it's blue). When considering where to place a shadow, one should first consider its light source; the only way for this particular piece to be coherent would be for a giant hole to appear within the earth and have the sun shine through, which would in turn create a trigonometrical, proportionate shadow. Otherwise, however, the sun would create a shadow that would be much shorter (vertically) than the actual figure casting it (mainly on a level surface, that is).

I like how the colors provide for a sort of monotone, melancholy air, but at the same time I'd like to see some more detail in the picture (maybe some cans or parked cars). Since the shadow was really more of a technicality I'm basing my '.5' deduction on the lack of background detail (I hate drawing backgrounds, personally, but I still think they make a piece all the more interesting).

Aigis responds:

Yeah, I know how the shadow would really look, but I'm calling artistic license on the shadow being bigger than him. The bigger problem is that the shadow, with the light source being behind him, would be a silhouette of him from behind, not him from the angle in which we're seeing him.

It's a shame that a lot of people apparently can't appreciate the hard work and beauty that this painting exhibits. As for the contents of the painting itself, there is an aesthetic simplicity to the rounded edges and colorful background. There's certainly a lot of detail in the background as well, which appears abstract and representative of a 'jubilant' mood. The strange ribbons that entangle the two lovers appear almost as snakes, which - at first - made me associate them with the snake from the tale of original sin. The lovers themselves, are rather fat and strange-looking, but I think that those qualities - in and of themselves - contain an aesthetic beauty once portrayed on canvas. The painting appears to pick at the human condition of rampant vanity and denounce it as a sin within itself; I'm not sure if that's what you intended by "Here is a painting I made today. Have a nice day.", but I think that it holds a lot of contextual meaning, and that's why I really like this piece. Even though the figures are somewhat cherubic in nature (not necessarily the most beautiful things you'd see in your life, but certainly interesting), I feel as though figures drawn in more realism (e.g. with copious wrinkles and shadows, etc.) would have also produced a similar aesthetic effect.

I'm really glad that you chose to paint this; it represents a lot of things that are subjectively beautiful and - once put on canvas - relatively profound (the latter at least to those with closed minds).

I really like the detail and gory blood splotches. I also like how you did the shirt as a sort of pattern and layered on top of that. The only issues I have are the smudgy lines at the top (i.e. the spines on the head), and the lighting on the mouth (the latter seems somewhat unnaturally bright). Other than that, the form is very interesting, and I also like the creepy air to this.

RawbSpeghetti responds:

Yea, when I head into my next painting I'm going to focus mostly on my line art as I can be kinda lazy with that.

I also learned how to make drool this time so next time around I'm gonna beef up that spit haha.

thanks for the review bud, I could use some pointers. :)

Black and white is likely my favorite media, and to see this piece in all of its gory detail is very humbling. I really like that you had the tenacity to conquer such a spacious canvas, because it was worth it. Whatever you did to achieve the texture on this is also very fascinating... I love how perverse and gory this is at the same time.

I like how you made the lines so defined; that's very important for a piece with minimal form. The black and white also compliments the simplicity.

Now this is what I remember scouting. I'm glad you didn't disappoint me; rather, you've impressed me with your array of art. I like this particular piece because it shows how you can adapt to an instruction and make it your own. I really like the angular expressionism.

Don't get me wrong; this is an awesome piece, I just think it's a tad anatomically confusing. I understand you have a well developed style, but I can't help but looking at the figures and thinking they're a bit malformed (more so with the figure on the right). It's primarily the arm length and the position of the legs that get me...

With that small criticism out of the way, I'd have to say that you've done a good job. The simple background may be minimalist, but I'm not a fan of backgrounds myself; I'd much rather see interesting figures (or draw them at least). The text is done in an interesting style and I really like the angles of the lines you draw.

I was just looking through some of the stuff you did based on how amazing your submission looked for the emoticon collab (I'd review that, but I'm really tired at the moment). Keep up the interesting style and all that rubbish.

Hooray! Luxembourg! I missed your art while I wasn't on NG. It seems you've improved, for that matter. The proportions seem a little more coherent and the character is awesome (though that's something that hasn't changed). Did you do most of this in photoshop? I really like the colors... Wasn't Tower of Heaven that insanely impossible game?

Luxembourg responds:

It's always nice to get a review from Hoboweasel!
I did it Corel Painter 11, and yes, Tower of Heaven was that insanely difficult game (that I loved).
I'm glad you like the drawing, man, and it's really nice to see you back on Newgrounds and posting art, which I might add is looking excellent as always.
Thank you for dropping me a review!

SO BRUTIFUL. Even your signature is amazing. I love the tempestivity of this.

I'm not sure whether I should refer to this as 'clone coitus' or perhaps some sort of deranged anthropomorphous annelid copulation, because this seems oddly reminiscent of your Christmas flash animation... You also blatantly mentioned that they're "worm people," so that might be more suggestive of the latter interpretation.

Either way, I really like the concept behind this (although I'm sure I don't understand it completely). The colors are much improved from your earlier works (I'm horrible at coloring because I seldom use them, but I know improvement when I see it). The piece is also a lot more precise than the art I've known you for; the lines are cleaner and the figures are a lot more anatomically consistent. Great job on this!

Woah... The gradients look amazing on this piece. I really like the bestial figure and the combination of technological aspects. Very precise and linear in nature, and quite awesome to look at.

Old NG rat. Much love.
